WORKSHOPS, LECTURES, AND DEMONSTRATIONS OFFERED
Juggling / Circus Skill Workshop
Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monseu, co-founders of Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, offer circus skill and juggling classes for all ages. These programs are ideal for school and after school programs, summer camps, parties, and festivals and can be presented as a single event or as a regularly scheduled event. As a weekly event, this program allows the students to develop and improve their skills which may culminate in a public performance.
Skills that may be taught:
- beginning 3 ball juggling
- plate spinning
- lasso spinning
- knot throwing
- diabolo (chinese yo-yo)
- advanced juggling
Each workshop will be customized to suit the participants. Large class sizes may result in additional Bindlestiff instructors.
Clown Transformations: Lecture/demonstration on the history of the clown
Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monseu, co-founders of the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus present a forty five minute lecture and demonstration delving into the histories of the comic character from Commedia del Arte through circus clowning to television, cartoons, and movies.? The demonstration includes the transformation of Keith and Stephanie into their clown characters Pennygaff and Philly. As they apply their clown faces, they will discuss the history and purpose behind the make-up. The audience will learn of the three primary styles of clowns: the white face, the auguste and the character clown. The demonstration will also include juggling and a slap-stick comedy demonstration.
Lectures on Business, the Arts, and Touring
Keith Nelson and Stephanie Monseu, co-founders of Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, present an entertaining and educational perspective on a variety of subjects. Experiencing first hand the struggles and thrills of running a circus troupe in America in the new millenium has provided endless experiences that can teach and inspire anyone. Lectures have included: "Why I put Balloons up my Nose" at Tyler Art School, Philadelphia, PA; "The Circus and Public Space" at Hampshire College; and "Circus, Sideshow and Burlesque Today" at 2004 Circus Historical Society Convention.
